THREE young local netballers were part the Tasmania under-13 netball team that made history by becoming the first Tasmanian team to win the Combined Australian Netball Association (CANA) under-13s National Championship.
Molly Page of Sorell, Shakoda Oswin of Orielton and Milly Hassett-Wiggins of Dodges Ferry were selected for the team that competed in the championships in Brisbane from September 21-27. The team played up to two games a day in temperatures reaching 28C, winning eight of their nine rostered games.
Advancing to the semi-finals AYC faced the host team Beenleigh who were steamrolled by the Tasmanian girls in a 61-18 thrashing. The Grand Final saw a showdown between AYC and Pimpama, with AYC winning 44- 28 to take home the championship. AYC Captain Shakoda Oswin was awarded the Honourable Medal for being recognised as the best player in the finals and was named the Most Valuable Player for the under-13 competition.
Local Liberal Member for Prosser, Jane Howlett MLC, recently met with the trio to congratulate them for their success. “I offer my congratulations to Molly, Shokoda, Milly and their teammates for this wonderful achievement and for representing Tasmania on the national sporting stage,” Ms Howlett said. “All of Tasmania should be proud of the AYC netball team’s success,” She added.
The trio are already looking forward to the 2023 National Championships in Adelaide.
