Stadium is officially in play

SORELL’S “game-changing’’ sports stadium is now open and already proving popular.

Federal, state and local government representatives joined a large number of sporting identities and locals to mark the milestone last month.

The South East Stadium is the culmination of years of work to secure funding and to establish a sporting precinct that is considered state-of-the-art.

Jointly funded by all three levels of government, the facility includes two netball/basketball courts, a gym, offices, a meeting room, change rooms, kitchen/ canteen, bar and function room and parking.

Sorell Mayor Kerry Vincent said he was proud of what had been achieved at the Pembroke Park precinct. “I am very proud of the stadium that has been built,’’ Mr Vincent said.

“When I first became Mayor one of my main ambitions was to secure funding for a dual court multi-sport facility in Sorell.”

For Sport and Recreation Minister Nic Street it was a “world-class facility’’ and the result of a “decade’s long community dream here in Sorell’’.

“It will give our next generation of sporting stars a place to hone their craft and the Sorell community a tremendous centre for grassroots sport.’’

The total cost of the project was $10.2 million.
