Athletes enjoy games

STUDENTS from all year levels ran, jumped, threw and cheered at last week’s two day King Island District High School annual athletics event.

The first day focussed on field events- discus, shotput, javelin, vortex throw, high jump, long jump, longest kick and a fun competition, longest hula hoop throw. Track events were held on Day Two and included 50 – 800 metre foot races for year and age levels, 50 -100 metre relays and a Bronzewing vs Cataraqui Relay. The Kinder – 2 had their own obstacle course and ‘retro races’ events.

The KIDHS aths carnivals are remembered by many past students when there were more ‘houses,’ students and off island state (public) school athletics competitions.

King Island District High School Principal Denise Bryant said after the event, “Cataraqui and Bronzewing were friendly opponents at the 2023 Athletics Carnival. Students displayed sportsmanship by supporting each other, whether they were on the same or opposing teams. Bronzewing took the honours this year by defeating Cataraqui, 1412 to 1167.

The two-day event was a wonderful opportunity for families to come along and support our students, with many parents participating in events.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, last week announced a new program – The Junior Travel Assistance Fund. The fund will provide a one-off grant of $250 to alleviate some of the competition costs for juniors. The Fund will be available for young Tasmanian athletes aged from 12 – 18 years
who have made a Tasmanian representative side and are required to travel interstate to compete at an eligible national sporting championship or event.

“Every young Tasmanian with an ambition to represent their state in their chosen sport should have the opportunity to do so. Sport can have
many positive impacts on a young person’s life including improving resilience, enhancing social development, and encouraging social connectedness.

“We want more Tasmanians to get active, no matter where they live, what their age or their circumstances, and we are investing significantly into the State’s sport and recreation sector to make this possible,” Minister Street said.

More information on the Junior Travel Assistance Fund, including the program guidelines and eligibility, will be made available in the coming weeks, with applications expected to open in May.
