LAST week Phoenix House recommenced their popular Cuisines of the World cooking classes.
The Indonesian Street Food session was quickly booked out. The class was ably led by Liz Butcher who lived in Indonesia, and she was assisted by one of Phoenix House coordinators, Karryn Lesley.
The class focussed on Bakmi Ayam. Bakmi Ayam is a popular and traditional Indonesian dish consisting of egg noodles served with a chicken meat and vegetables in a savory sauce, often cooked with a flavourful broth. Bakmi Ayam is also known as Mie Ayam in Indonesia and has regional variations.
The noodles are usually stir-fried with vegetables such as bok choy, cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts, and mushrooms. The chicken is usually cooked with spices and seasonings to create a flavourful sauce. It is often served with a side of steamed rice and is considered a staple food in Indonesian cuisine.
It is a popular quick and convenient street food and can also be found in many Indonesian restaurants. The class concluded by enjoying the products of their labour buffet style.
