Motoring events keen to draw patrons

WHETHER you’re into two, four or 16-wheelers, there are two weekends coming up that feature events to impress lovers of stuff that really moves.

The 40th annual truck run, organised by the Tasmanian Truck Owners and Operators Association, will be held on the Longford Showground on March 5, 10am-3pm, with just a gold coin donation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service gaining entry to the biggest display of trucks from around the state after their run from Launceston out to Longford.

Fire trucks, the Peter Brock tribute trailers, a RFDS simulator, vintage trucks and private collection show trucks rarely seen in public will be lined up for close inspection.

Take along all your spare funds if you want to grab the $1 raffle tickets that can unlock prizes worth hundreds of dollars.

Local businesses have put up close to $60,000 in prizes that will all be won on the spot.

Another raffle will see someone go home with truck load of wood and a silent auction will mean some specialty items could provide a bargain to the lucky bidders.

At the same time in a quieter corner of Longford on the Village Green and nearby velodrome the Classic & Retro Cycle Show starts at 10am and finishes at 2pm.

More details on this and other Bike Week events at http://www.tamarbug.org.au

Anyone who has an old bike is invited to put it on display or give it a whirl around the velodrome with period dress encouraged.

Icecreams, coffee and plenty of place for a picnic rug will make this a lovely, nostalgic event which is all about encouraging anyone, with any bike, to get in the saddle during Bike Week 2023.

The suspense is building to the Longford Motorama with every day seeing another classic motorcar or motorbike roll into town ready to go on display at Woolmers Estate, Longford. Friday, March 9, at noon the gates open on a historic collection that celebrates the heady days of Formula One racing in Longford (finishing 5.30pm). The display continues on Saturday 10-5.30 and Sunday 10-4pm. $10 adult. Children U16 free. Three day pass $20.

Race and classic cars, motorbikes, simulators, kids’ entertainment, restaurant, live bands and DJ, trail rides, food vans and specialty stalls will be all in the one place for everyone to enjoy and F1 legend Alan Jones will be there to meet his fans.

It’s been 100 years since Jack Archer of Woolmers won his last Longford Motorcycle Race in 1923 on an Indian and lovers of these old bikes will be in for a real treat.

The Morris 1000 built and raced by John Charlton that reached 108mph on the Flying Mile at Longford will be there along with Rob Knott’s Bessant VW tribute to the world’s fastest VW in ’64 and ’65 and the Brabham BT23D Alfa V8, Jim Clark’s Lotus 39, Brabham BT open wheelers and the $1.2m Black Lightning motorcycle and much more.

On Friday night, March 9 live band Kantankerous is playing with free entry at the Country Club, Longford, 6-10pm.
