KING Island District High School has had a busy term and the last fortnight is no exception, with a wide range of programs to support student engagement with learning.
“We were lucky to be able to host Hydro TAS staff at school to undertake an electrical safety program for primary students and careers information with secondary students,” principal Denise Bryant said.
“Students have been busy in our school garden beds planting winter crops with the support of Sharon Lee our expert gardener. Cathy and Craig Kinlyside and Sharon harvested more than 10kg of honey from our school bee hives.”
Grade 3 students visited the Cenotaph and RSL clubrooms with Mrs Blake.
King Island RSL subbranch president Tom Shaw donated his time to talk with students about the history of the Cenotaph, the important items found at the King Island Memorial Park and the interesting artefacts within the RSL clubrooms. Students also learnt about flags and participated in a flag raising ceremony. The school will again be involved in this year’s Anzac ceremony and service at the Cenotaph on April 25.
Grade 1/2 students created their own abstract modern art masterpieces after looking at Wassily Kandinsky and explored the interrelation between colour and form that engage the sight, sound and emotions.
“We are fortunate to have Mr Samuel Winckel as our art teacher. Samuel is in his second year with us at KIDHS and brings his experience to provide a wonderful art program,” Ms Bryant said.
Kate and Ted from Inside Out 4 Kids spent last week with KIDHS students and teachers sharing many important skills and strategies to build emotional literacy skills and presented a Grade 1-5 emotional literacy program.
Harmony Week from March 20 to 26 is the celebration that recognises diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds.
It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. On Harmony Day students were encouraged to wear orange to show their support and all year levels including Launching into Learning were involved in activities that focussed on “everyone belonging”. Launching Into Learning sessions are held every Tuesday from 1.45-2.45pm and Thursday from 10.30-11.45am for children aged from birth to 4 years old.
