Footy season countdown

IT’S March, and the footy season clock and grant deed dates are starting to click down.

The Grassy Oval upgrade project has been moving slowly along since a $300,000 Federal grant for the Grassy Sports Complex Oval was awarded.

A second grant $86,581 was secured in 2022 in the Improving the Playing Field Grant Program.

To date the following ele- ments have been completed:

• oval surface drainage and oval reconstruction;

• oval perimeter drainage;

• ablution container pur- chased (on island and stored at council);

• installation of new goal posts; and wallaby fence completed.

Elements outstanding (as stated in the grant deed): upgrade the dugouts and other player amenities to improve public health and safety standards; and

• remove the condemned kiosk and change rooms and replace them with structures of similar size: at least 10m2 for the kiosk and at least 55m2 for the change room.

There is now urgency based on grant deed timeframes and the desire of the Grassy Foot- ball Club to complete the upgrade projects before the start of the King Island Football season in May.

Lead time to ordering materials and construction timeframes are critical factors in meeting these deadlines.

The King Island Council accepted the recommendation to approve the costs estimates and scope of works provided in the February 23 council meeting and complete the remaining and outstanding elements of the project.

Elemental cost estimates and detailed scope of works can be viewed on the council website under Meetings.

The council reported that the $300,000 Grant Deed Total had $264,948 YTD expenses and the remaining funds are $35,052. The Improving the Playing Field Grant is $86,581 (Ex GST) and there are total available funds $121,633 as of 23/02/23. The cost estimates: dugouts $5,000, changeroom $55,000, kiosk $25,000 total $85,000.
