A KEY focus for the Rotary Club of Tasman Peninsula has been its long-running involvement with the local school and students. Rotarians are passionate about giving students as many opportunities as possible to achieve their life goals. In doing so we believe those students will bring their positive attitudes and skills back to the community.
This year a large project involving several members and students was brought to fruition with the completed restoration of an old farm cart. Students developed skills in planning, design and a range of metal and wood working skills in order to achieve their goal.
The finished cart will be on display in the community and hopefully this year the art department will be able to get involved by designing and applying a paint scheme to this marvelous piece of history. Congratulations to all involved and especially to Bert Dorgelo who led the project and presented the cart to the community.
Another key component of Rotary’s support is the presentation of education scholarships that support students to attend either secondary college or tertiary institutes.
At the Tasman District School’s recent end of year Awards Recognition Assembly Rotary were also pleased to be able to support the school and students through the presentation of these scholarships. This year Rotary distributed four secondary scholarships to students.
The awards, each worth $750, were proudly presented by Marian Larner and Jim Anderson to Shae Spaulding, Hannah Cukurkavakli, Faye Giblin and Edie Little. Later this year the club also hopes to award a tertiary scholarship worth $1500.
In addition to the scholarships the club also donated books for secondary student achievement in mathematics, science, history and english and for outstanding achievement in primary.
