Race on for Kingfish

K&K Mobile Catering packed up after Saturday’s races and Anne Marie Bayron Sutor Micic and Dale Sutor Micic with son Kingston decided on a bit of R&R – after all it was called Recreation Day.

They arrived in Quarantine Bay around 8 pm, and they were not disappointed as kingfish were running.

“We caught three large kingfish and one was really big one – about a metre long and just as tall as our son Kingston, “said Anne Marie.

“Catching it was a bit challenging as the fish fought really hard, as I held the rod while Dale gaffed it to get it into the boat.”

Kingfish Seriola lalandi are also known as yellowtail and kingie. Once hooked, kingfish are known to dive straight down towards the bottom to cut off or tangle the line.

A wide variety of lures such as soft plastics, jigs and flies along with skirted lures can be used.

A range of baits including live bait, squid, prawns, fish and cuttlefish can be effective in attracting kingfish.

Kingfish has a medium to strong flavour and is often prepared as cutlets or steaks but can be eaten whole. It has few bones kingfish are suitable to bake, barbeque, grill, deep and shallow fry and as sashimi.

With warming waters scientists studying kingfish (and snapper and King George whiting) say there will be more kingfish, for longer periods and growing larger in local waters.
