Market up and running

THE Okines Community House and Garden has launched its own Local Growers Market to sell fresh, locally grown produce.

The Okines Local Growers Market purchases spray-free/organic produce from local farmers and growers to be sold to the community at reasonable prices. For a very small fee it can be delivered to your house.

The Local Growers Market also aims to complement the wholefoods available through the Okines Food Co-Op. Establishing a Local Growers Market had been part of the Okines Community House strategic plan for a number of years.

In 2022 it was awarded a Healthy Tasmania Fund Step Forward grant that allowed the Community House to purchase a large commercial refrigerator that was necessary to store the Local Growers Market produce.

The Local Growers Market was officially launched last month by Community Services Minister Nic Street. Local Liberal Prosser MLC Jane Howlett, who was among the attendees, said: “This is a wonderful initiative that will assist members of the community to access healthy food so they can live healthier lives.”

The Local Growers Market is open every Tuesday 1pm-5pm, Friday 10am-1pm and Sunday 9.30am-12.30pm.

A list of available produce along with prices is available on the Okines Community Garden Facebook page.
