Green team on beach clean

KING Island District High School partnered with the Tasmania Seafood Industry Council, NRM South and Cradlecoast NRM as part of their Green Team program.

Grades from across the school travelled to different locations around King Island over two days to join in the Marine Debris Clean Up Program event.

The TSIC is the peak body representing the interests of wild capture fishers, marine farmers and seafood processors in Tasmania.

The council works in conjunction with the industry sector groups to ensure that all sectors of industry are ecologically sustainable and make an ongoing economic contribution to the Tasmanian economy, particularly in regional areas.

Students walked to Currie Harbour to collect rubbish along the coastline and travelled to Yellow Rock Beach, the coastlines north and south of the Ettrick River.

Two ute loads of debris included tyres, paper, nets, ropes, fishing and boating debris and plastic were collected that were sorted into categories by TSIC staff.

Principal Denise Bryant thanked the school’s Green Team co-ordinator Mr Winckel for organising the opportunity to be involved and for accompanying students throughout the two days.
