Beach best of British

TOURISM Australia’s annual Best Australian Beaches list for 2023 placed British Admiral Beach just out of Currie at number 8 in their ‘Top 10 list’.

Coming in at first place was Stokes Bay on Kangaroo Island. There were almost 12,000 Aussie beaches to consider. The list was determined by Brad Farmer AM who is a conservationist and advocate for the protection of coastlines.

“It’s summer again and international travellers who are returning to Australia are keen to get some sand between their toes and holiday on the world’s most diverse and magnificent selection of beaches,” Mr Farmer said.

Lisa Wood who is known for her King Island beach, sunrise and sunset photography said. British had many faces. Mr Farmer has decades of travelling Australian beaches and said only 16 per cent were accessible by conventional road.

The King Island ‘vibe’ and the community were part of Mr Farmer’s selection criterion. “I go to the beach, get to have a swim, talk to the locals and I get a feel for them. I’m much more immersive, and I guess a bit emotionally invested in it,” said Farmer.

“Very much the [criterion] is, what kind of community are you going to experience when you get there?”
