20-year plan for major expansion

HOBART Airport has announced plans to double the size of its terminal as the centrepiece of its 20-year vision for the state’s key gateway. In releasing its Master Plan for public consultation, Hobart Airport Chief Executive Officer Norris Carter said the number of people travelling through Hobart Airport was forecast to increase from 2.8 million in 2020 to 5.5 million by 2042.

“As a result we are looking at a doubling in the footprint of the terminal from 12,000 sq m to 23,000 sq m,” Mr Carter said. “This redeveloped terminal would not only increase space throughout the terminal, but would deliver a much-improved passenger experience, with significantly more food and beverage offerings as well as retail outlets.” The plan does not include air bridges due to the high cost and need to build a second storey. Mr Carter said in the meantime, Hobart Airport was looking forward to confirmation of funding for the runway upgrade by the Federal Government in its financial update later this year.

“Once confirmed we Airport ready for take off anticipate construction of the runway upgrade to be completed in early 2024,” he said. “This is a really important project, which will not only unlock future passenger and export opportunities, but with our terminal expansion plans, create significant economic growth for Tasmania.’’

Mr Carter said the draft Master Plan maps the airport’s plans to sustainably grow air connectivity, including domestic and international opportunities, the development of air cargo exports, and the consolidation of Antarctic connectivity.

“The plan aims to deliver significant opportunities for Tasmania, with the airport growing to support more than 3500 jobs and $412 million per year in economic activity by 2042,” he said.

Community consultation regarding the Master Plan is open until 5pm, Wednesday, November 2, 2022.
